Build Our Homeplace - Umuwi Ethnic Studies

Umuwi Ethnic Studies

Across the country, public education is under attack. From book bans to anti–Ethnic Studies laws, political forces are working to silence conversations about race, truth, and justice. In Illinois and beyond, these efforts have threatened teachers’ livelihoods, erased BIPOC voices from classrooms, and stifled students’ ability to learn the truth about their world. Umuwi Ethnic Studies was founded in direct response to this crisis—to protect and defend the rights of young people in Chicago to learn about their identities, their communities, and their shared histories with honesty, pride and a sense of empowerment and hope.

Your donation will strengthen and sustain our movement to safeguard Ethnic Studies, train and support educators, and create classrooms where BIPOC youth see their full selves reflected in the curriculum.  Together, we can help ensure that schools across Chicago and Illinois become places where our shared histories are honored, our communities are celebrated, and education becomes a home for belonging and justice.
