Friends of the Salinas Community Science Workshop,

It’s giving season again, so I’d like to take a quick look back on our accomplishments since last year in hopes of inspiring your continued support!  We:

  • Served up around 50,000 engagements to more than 5000 unduplicated kids and family members in the 23-24 school year.
  • Rolled out our mobile unit, the 40 ft Science Workshop on Wheels, to two sites weekly as well as to many schools and other locations.
  • Took kids backpacking in the Ventana Wilderness and rafting on the south fork of the American River.
  • Assisted 7th and 8th grade teachers to amp up hands-on projects for their students.
  • Facilitated middle school MESA students to win the regional contest.
  • Provided complete tools-in-the-hand kits for hundreds of kids in several programs
  • Put on themed Science Workshop Family Nights each month for families of our drop-in programs.
  • Run a open structure STEAM program for girls each Wednesday at El Sausal Middle School.
  • Supported hundreds of new projects from the incredible minds of our students.
  • Employed 6 high school aged interns to mentor younger kids as we mentor them.

We were hit with our share of problems as well.  We lost 3 excellent staff. Two new ones are now going strong, but we are still looking for a co-director – please spread the word:  Position announcement here! We also lost a couple of contracts we’d had for years, and are struggling to get grants and other contracts to fill in the gaps.  We still pride ourselves in being a scrappy, thrifty operation, getting the bulk of our materials from the junk heap, but of course some necessities require cold, hard cash.

It’s been easy to see the bright side of our challenges.  Even as we  work to make ends meet, we are experiencing record numbers of kids at our drop-in hours, full of eager, creative energy and inspiring us to keep on doing what we’re doing.

All in all, SCSW continues to be an efficient, effective organization, fined tuned to offer our community the unique opportunities of tools-in-the-hand making and free exploration of the world with science. We complement what schools are doing and provide resources otherwise unavailable.

This giving season I hope you’ll find enough in your slush fund to support the kids and families we serve!  You make it all happen!

Thanks!

Curt, Arturo, Sebastian and Maleah

  1. What is the problem you want to solve?
Provide a description of the underlying problem or situation you want to improve with funding. Explain why this issue is important and what negative effects it currently has on people, the environment or your community.
  2. What is your solution?
Describe your plan to address the problem and highlight what makes your approach unique or effective.
  3. How will the funds be used?
Outline how the money will be allocated to specific programs, resources or services.
  4. How will contributions make a tangible difference?
Explain the benefits and positive changes resulting from your project being funded. If appropriate, also explain how the lives of beneficiaries will be impacted.
  5. How will you keep supporters involved in your campaign?
